David Farr Memorial Park

Picture
Area: Pickering North

Age Range: 18 months to 12 years

Parking:
Weekends - plenty in the Vaughan Willard Public School parking lot
Weekdays - limited street parking along Glenanna Road

Ground Cover: mulch

Main Equipment:
  • 2 swings
  • 2 infant swings
  • 5 slides
  • 2 rock climbing walls
  • 1 fireman pole
  • 1 play fire truck

Accessibility Features: talking tubes

Facilities/Other:
  • butterfly garden
  • 2 soccer fields
  • softball diamond
  • washrooms (seasonal from 10am until 8pm)
  • 4 tennis courts (part of Glendale Tennis Club)

Surrounding Park Area: a nice walking path surrounds the park that winds through the Glenanna neighborhood and past a butterfly garden; a cement pad for skateboarding?? is located at the bottom of the hill behind the playground

Seating: 2 park benches facing the smaller play structure, and a stone wall that can be used as seating wrapping around the back of the playground; there are also a few park benches scattered around the paved trail through the park

Shade: no shade on the playground structure, shade from the surrounding trees over some park benches in the area

Overall assessment: A great central playground for big and small kids.  Even though the rock climbing wall is an older model than some, it is one of the best as it leads to a lookout tower with a fireman pole!  And this is one of the rare parks in Pickering that has a washroom building (operating seasonally 10am to 8pm).  Don't forget to see if you can spot a butterfly in the field of bushes beside the tennis courts (labelled as a butterfly garden)!

The park is a great central area yes. But the Glendale area and surrounding area definitely needs a splash pad. Disappointing that I have to travel to Ajax and Whitbty for splash pads.

The park also needs an even amount if wood chips. As the west side of the playground requires more wood chips as it floods when it rains.
Thank you.

I agree with Ruth. There is never enough wood chips. Gets super muddy after it rains.. The area not in use at the bottom of the hill, would make a great splash pad !

It WAS a wading pool many years ago. Notice how it slopes to the center.

A splash pad is a great idea!!! A mudpad... not so much.. Although you don't have to travel to Ajax or Whitby for a splash pad.per say. Liverpool by the lake has one, although it's teenie tiny. Rotary Park in Ajax definately wins as far as splash pads and parks go. I would like to see if any additions are made to Dave Farr Memorial. It is a great spot and location that could be even more. I also vote to put in a splash pad!

Using this park pretty much every day there definitely needs to be a splash pad. The unused space at the bottom of the hill would be an excellent place. There already is an existing building for the city to house the pump ect, and the current bike/skate pad currently there is cracked and worn. Great idea!

A splash pad is a definite need & want! I as well have to travel to Ajax for a splash pad. The one down at Liverpool can't really be considered a splash pad. My daughters ages, 4 & 6, won't go to it as they find it tiny and not exciting.

It's a nice park, a splash pad would be a very nice addition to the area. It's in walking distance for many day care providers and parents alike. It would be beneficial to add a splash pad to the park as it would be a better option than going to Ajax or whitby.

My daughter and I also agree it would be a great place for a north Pickering Splash Pad! Why not send a note to City Hall? See if we can get this topic added to an upcoming agenda;

As a tennis club member at the park, I can tell you that your petition will be futile. Our club attempted to petition the city a few years ago to let us turn the concrete pad into two more tennis courts that would have gallery seating for tournaments. We were flatly turned down because that area is considered part of a 'flood plain'

I agree. Splash pad!! On a related subject, does anyone know anything about David Farr, for whom this park is named??

I had the extreme privilege of having Dave as my uncle. He was a great guy who cared about his community and showed it by being on the Board of Directors at Ajax Pickering hospital and the Pickering Library and our Regional Representative to name a few of his contributions.

Dave was an amazing man who would have been all for Splash Pads.

Think about him when you're playing with your children at the park.

.....and is under the juristiction of The Greater Toronto Conservation Authority. It all has to do with the creek that runs through the park. ( continuatuon of previous comment)

Thank you Lynn! That makes sense why there is nothing at that spot anymore. It would still be nice if we had a splash pad somewhere in North Pickering.
