Brock Ridge Community Park

Age Range: 18months and up

Parking:  large parking lot off of Brock Street (just North of Finch)

Ground Cover:  wood chips

Main Equipment:
  • 5 slides
  • 1 teeter rocker
  • 1 climbing structure

Accessibility Features:  none

Facilities/Other:
  • Hardball Diamond
  • Softball Diamond
  • Mini Soccer Pitch
  • Picnic Tables
  • Seasonal Washrooms (open May to Thanksgiving from 9am-10pm)
  • Access to Trails and Cycling paths

Surrounding Park Area: huge green spaces, fields, and large shady trees

Seating: three benches facing the playground, additional multiple picnic tables throughout the park

Shade: some afternoon shade over parts of the larger playground structure, plenty of shade from the surrounding trees

Overall assessment: A wonderful park for a picnic, and not only because it conveniently has picnic tables, but also has washrooms! Plenty of parking to meet up with friends, play tag through the trees, and explore the small stream and swamp in the park. Not to mention that there is another playground at the top of the hill above the parking lot (review coming soon)!

Canadian Street Parkette

Age Range: 18months and up

Parking:  some street parking off of Canadian Street

Ground Cover:  wood chips

Main Equipment:
  • 1 saucer swing (was not up when we visited)
  • 1 slide
  • 1 beaver rocker
  • 1 climbing tree structure

Accessibility Features:  one saucer swing (was not up when we visited)

Facilities/Other:
  • none

Surrounding Park Area: small green space and some small surrounding trees

Seating: two benches facing the playground, additional rock seating around the park

Shade: none over the playground itself, small shade pavilion over two benches at the one entrance to the parkette

Overall assessment: This is a fun small Canadian themed parkette with a unique tree climber good for a little entertainment at this new playground. It's nice to see small parkettes being added to brand new neighbourhoods!

Vanier Park

Parking:  some street parking on the North side of the park at the end of Vanier Street

Ground Cover:  wood chips

Main Equipment:
  • 2 swings
  • 2 infant swings
  • 2 slides
  • 2 sand scoop diggers
  • 1 huge pyramid climber
  • 1 doughnut spinner
  • 1 rock climbing wall
  • 1 zip line

Accessibility Features:  one sand scoop digger

Facilities/Other:
  • see Vanier Park Splash Pad post

Surrounding Park Area: open green space and some small surrounding trees

Seating: two benches facing the playground, additional rock seating around the park

Shade: none over the playground itself, small shade pavilion over two benches facing the playground and splash pad

Overall assessment: A great park for a day trip because there is a splash pad right beside it! Definitely a park meant to entertain older kids with plenty of climbing and a nice long zip line.

Walbridge Park

Weekdays: very limited street parking during school hours
Weekends: plenty of parking at the Newcastle Public School lot

Ground Cover:  mixed sand 

Main Equipment:
  • 1 swing
  • 1 infant swing
  • 3 slides

Accessibility Features:  none

Facilities/Other:
  • see Walbridge Park Splash Pad post
  • 1 soccer field
  • 1 basketball court

Surrounding Park Area: open green space and some surrounding trees

Seating: four benches facing the playground, additional benches around splash pad area

Shade: none over the playground itself, small shade pavilion over one bench facing the playground, surrounding trees providing some shade

Overall assessment: A great park for a day trip because there is the wading pool right next to it! Plenty of weekend parking with the school lot right next to it, so invite friends to meet you at this park!

Exeter Park

Age Range: infant and up

Parking:  no parking off of King street (fire-hydrant zone) parking is around the West side of Exeter Rd. (which is an unpaved walk across the grassy field to get to the playground)

Ground Cover:  wood chips

Main Equipment:
  • 2 swings
  • 1 infant swing
  • 1 accessible bucket swing
  • 5 metal slides
  • 1 car station

Accessibility Features: wheelchair accessible car station, accessible bucket swing

Facilities/Other:
  • see Exeter Park wading pool  post
  • 1 softball diamond

Surrounding Park Area: open green space and some surrounding trees

Seating: two benches facing the playground, two benches facing the wading pool

Shade: none over the playground itself, one tree beside the park and park benches, surrounding trees providing some shade

Overall assessment: A great park for a day trip because there is the wading pool right next to it! One large tree provides a great shady spot beside the playground for a picnic or a break for snacks. If you will be parking off of the West Exeter Rd. street side, it is quite a walk to get to the playground across the grassy field (especially if you're toting a day trip worth of bags!).
