Fall weather seems to be officially upon us. That brings colder weather, rain, and less daylight. Our instincts may drive us to stay indoors and pull the curtains to avoid looking at the dreary conditions outside, however, did you know that it is actually beneficial to your mood to go outside even in the yuckiest weather? (reference: Mayo Clinic)

CAUTION: You will get wet! so here is a useful list of things to wear and take with you on a rainy day adventure;
  • rubber boots
  • splash pants (highly recommended for the smaller kids who will most definitely underestimate the sizes of puddles)
  • good quality rain jackets with hoods
  • an umbrella or two (not necessary and may get more in the way depending what activity you are doing)
  • waterproof backpack or bag that contains a couple of dry towels or extra pairs of pants and socks (again not necessary for every activity)
Now on to the fun stuff!

Outdoor Rainy Day Activities for Kids

In no particular order of activity that gets you the most wet;
  1. Puddle Jumping
  2. Magic Puddle Jumping
  3. Nature Walk
  4. Follow the Water (science)
  5. Rain Painting
  6. Rain Music (put out different objects and let the rain fall)
  7. Make Mud Pies
  8. Watch Worms
  9. Float Objects (test the science of what floats and what doesn't)
  10. Build a rain shelter  (and learn what does and doesn't let water pass through it!)
  11. Dance and Sing rainy day songs

If that isn't enough to get you outside, moving, laughing and improving your rainy day blahs, take a look at following one of my favorite blogs; Rain or Shine Mamma

Also don't forget after you finish your rainy adventures to go inside and warm up! We like to do this with a cup of hot cocoa or a bowl of butternut squash soup.
Slip on your raincoat, Pull on your galoshes; Wading in puddles Makes splishes and sploshes.
