Picture
Area: Southwest Pickering

Age Range: 18 months and up

Parking: limited street parking off Stonebridge Lane

Ground Cover:  mulch

Main Equipment:
  • 5 slides
  • 1 swing
  • 1 infant swing
  • 1 fireman pole
  • multiple climbing apparatus

Accessibility Features: none

Facilities/Other:
  • 1 softball diamond

Surrounding Park Area: a green space hill beside the playground with the softball diamond behind it

Seating: 2 park benches facing the playground

Shade: no shade over the playground, plenty of shade in the surrounding trees

Overall assessment: A park that allows you to watch a game of softball and keep an eye on the kids at the playground (although if you are a heavy hitter perhaps stick to a different softball field as the 'outfield' here is pointed directly at the playground!). There are plenty of monkey bars and climbing opportunities to hone balancing skills at this little playground.

Overall assessment: From the balancing toadstools, to the monkey bars, to the multiple climbing challenges, this is another great climbing playground that would be great for a game of grounders! Bring your fireman hat as this park also has a rarely spotted firepole!

Quaker Village Park

Picture
Area: West Uxbridge

Age Range: 18 months and up

Parking: some street parking off Quaker Village Drive, lots of parking at the Uxbridge Arena & Recreation Centre (it is a 5 minute walk away along Quaker Trail that starts up behind the lawn bowling club)

Ground Cover:  sand

Main Equipment:
  • 4 slides
  • 1 swing
  • 1 infant swing
  • 1 firetruck climber
  • 1 firepole
  • 1 rock climbing wall
  • 1 rocking motorcycle
  • multiple climbing apparatus

Accessibility Features:  none

Facilities/Other:
  • surrounded by 3km Quaker Trail
  • small green park space beside the playground
  • the closest playground to the Bonner Boys Splash Park (a 5 minute walk away beside the Uxbridge Arena & Recreation Center)

Surrounding Park Area: small green space

Seating: 2 park benches beside the park, four picnic tables around the park

Shade: no shade over the playground itself, plenty of shade provided by the trees beside the playground

Overall assessment: This is a quieter playground in the middle of a green belt. If you're planning on walking here from the Bonner Boys Splash Park, or parking at the Uxbridge Arena & Recreation Center, there is officially no path from the area to the start of Quaker Trail behind the lawn bowling club. I was able to push a stroller up the grass to the start of the gravel trail but it was a bit of work. The playground is great for developing climbing skills and balancing skills as there are a lot of different things to walk between. This is also one of the very few playgrounds in Durham Region that we have seen with a firepole! There is also a small stream behind the brush and marsh that you can watch from the bridge beside the playground. It's great for a day out if you plan on hitting the Splash Park too!

Lake Vista Park

Picture
Area: South Oshawa

Age Range: 5 yrs and up

Parking:  Two parking lots located off Emerald Ave and oxford Street (bus stop on oxford W side of park)

Ground Cover: sand

Main Equipment:
  • 4 slides (2 spiral)
  • 2 swings
  • 2 infant swings
  • 1 rubber bouncer
  • 1 fireman pole
  • 1 elephant rocker
  • climbing apparatus

Accessibility Features: none

Facilities/Other:
  • Clubhouse
  • Splash Pad
  • Soccer field
  • Baseball diamond
  • Basketball net (single)

Surrounding Park Area: Lots of fields and hills around park and some trees to the east.

Seating: 5 park benches

Shade:  'Shade Shack' and some surrounding tree shade

Overall assessment: There is a lot to climb at this park for older kids. Smaller kids can access the one spiral slide on their own, but I would recommend tons of supervision for smaller kids playing in the park. There is a nice shaded area with benches for parents as well as tons of open space to have a picnic on a blanket.
